Start Lead Gen Forms early, then narrow them to recent engagers

Open the conversion layer as soon as a warm audience can serve, then tighten it to recent engagers.

The rule

Where to move past the default.

The default

Lead Gen Forms pre-fill members' profile details, which makes them the easiest way to convert on LinkedIn.

What the Standard adds

Start the form on the 90-day audience. Once the 30-day audience can serve, the form moves there and the 90-day audience gets nurture and trust content.

Why it holds

Opening the conversion layer early starts offer testing sooner. Narrowing it later keeps the ask on people whose interest is recent.

When it matters less

A form to a cold audience can work for a light offer people want straight away, like a report or a checklist.

Decision triggers

Spot it, then act on it.

What experts say

Where people in the field stand on it.

  • So good! Especially with small budgets, I usually start with any retargeting audiences I can get my hands on, since we really need a large enough audience. But once that audience has grown and is actively serving, we know that someone who interacted with our ads yesterday is more likely to re-engage than someone who interacted 350 days ago. It's hard to remember to actually do, but it's such good practice to go back in and tighten the time window, so retargeting audiences hold only the most recent engagers, the people who can be expected to remember interacting with the brand.

  • Cost per lead is not everything. A very broad lead gen offer can have a very low cost per lead, and a high-intent one a very high cost per lead. So before dropping a form over cost per lead, look at the intent of the offer and the quality of the leads.
