Grow a signal list by adding signal lists from the same market

LinkedIn's audience size guidance fits audiences built from filters. A list built from buying signals starts smaller and grows a different way.

The rule

Where to move past the default.

The default

An ad set needs at least 300 members to run. To drive results, LinkedIn recommends larger audiences: 50,000 members, and 300,000 for Sponsored Content.

What the Standard adds

Those sizes fit audiences built from targeting filters. A signal list starts smaller, around 1,000 companies and 5,000 to 10,000 people. Grow it by adding signal lists from the same market, and leave fit-only companies in the cold layer. Never widen a signal list just to hit a size.

Why it holds

A signal list is small because it's specific: these companies have a reason to buy now. Pad it with companies that only fit, and delivery spreads across them while the signal companies see you less.

When it matters less

For broad demand generation built from targeting filters, LinkedIn's sizes are a fair target.

What experts say

Where people in the field stand on it.

  • My lists start at 1,000 companies, and 10,000 is better. I get to LinkedIn's number by adding signal lists from the same market. My floor is the market: at least 10,000 decision-makers and deals worth $10,000 or more.
